WHAT IS ENRICHED AIR NITROX?

Enriched air, commonly called Nitrox or EANx, contains less nitrogen than regular air. This can give you longer no-decompression times and shorter surface intervals — especially useful when you’re doing multiple dives.

During the PADI Enriched Air Diver course, you’ll learn how to plan dives with Nitrox, manage oxygen exposure, analyse the oxygen content of your cylinder and set your dive computer for the gas you’re using.

WHO CAN JOIN?

The course is open to PADI Open Water Divers aged 12 and above, or divers with a qualifying equivalent certification. It can also be completed in conjunction with Open Water training where applicable.

What is Nitrox? +
Nitrox, also called Enriched Air or EANx, is a breathing gas with a higher percentage of oxygen and less nitrogen than regular air. Breathing less nitrogen can allow longer no-decompression times and shorter surface intervals on many dives.
Does Nitrox let me dive deeper? +
No. Nitrox is not used to increase your maximum depth. Because the gas contains more oxygen, each Nitrox mix has a Maximum Operating Depth, or MOD, that must not be exceeded. The course teaches you how to understand and stay within those limits.
What is MOD? +
MOD stands for Maximum Operating Depth. It is the maximum depth at which a particular Nitrox mix can be used within the planned oxygen exposure limit. You’ll learn how to determine and understand MOD during the course.
Do I need to make any dives to get Nitrox certified? +
No. Open-water dives are not required for the PADI Enriched Air Diver certification. The course focuses on knowledge development and practical applications such as analysing a cylinder and setting a dive computer. Optional Nitrox dives may be added where available.
What certification do I need before taking Nitrox? +
You can take the PADI Enriched Air Diver course as a certified Open Water Diver, or it can be combined with Open Water training where applicable.
What is the minimum age for the Nitrox course? +
The minimum age for the PADI Enriched Air Diver course is 12 years.
Why do I need to analyse my own Nitrox cylinder? +
The oxygen percentage determines the limits of your dive, including the MOD. During the course, you’ll learn how to use an oxygen analyser to confirm the mix in your cylinder before diving.
Do I need a Nitrox-compatible dive computer? +
If you plan to dive with Nitrox, your dive computer should support enriched-air settings. During the course, you’ll learn how to set the computer for the oxygen percentage in the gas you’re using.
Can I take Nitrox along with another PADI course? +
Yes. Enriched Air Diver can be combined with Open Water training and many other in-water PADI courses, making it an easy specialty to add while you’re already completing other dive training.
